Why did Georgia scrap the common law marriage? If the reasons for splitting isn't controversial. They might as well just get on with their lives without divorce, except for when they will get married again.

Since there's no such thing as a Georgia common law divorce, if the couple breaks up, they also enjoy all of the rights, privileges, and headaches of a formal divorce or legal separation. Trying to remarry without a formal dissolution would be bigamy, and renders the second marriage void!

I had a common law divorce. The procedure for getting a divorce after common law marriage is the same as for couples who went through a formal marriage ceremony. You would file papers asking the Court to dissolve your common law marriage and divide any property the two of you accumulated during the time you were together.

I like the fact that even though Georgia no longer recognizes a common law marriage,if it is from other states that does ,then it will be recognized. Then those who want to get divorced in this case don't need to struggle with court case in another state. This is very good.
